HAMILTON — This past weekend the Amherst senior girls basketball team traveled to Hamilton to participate in the SOSI Super 12 Invitational.

This tournament featured all the top schools in the province and Amherst showed they belonged. They made it into the final four on Sunday where they lost to the eventual champions and probably the #1 seed at AAAA OFSAA this year, Brantford St. John. Brantford has not lost a game yet this year and showed why they are considered to be the best team in the province. Amherst managed to stay close for most of the first half and trailed by four points late in the second quarter when St. John went on a 10-0 run to take a 14-point lead into halftime. Amherst could not overcome the deficit and eventually fell 62-42. Christine Belcher led the scoring with nine points, Courtney VandeBovenkamp and Korissa Williams had eight each.

Amherst ended up 1-1 in a very tough pool as two of the three teams in their pool ended up in the final four.

In their first game in pool play they defeated Holy Trinity from Oakville 47-36 but lost to St. Mary’s from Hamilton the other finalist 52-34. In the Holy Trinity victory Courtney VandeBovenkamp had 20 points and Korissa Williams had 15, Amy Belcher had eight and Sam Kellam had four. In the lost to St. Mary’s Amherst had the score tied at 28-28 with about two minutes left in the third quarter but then went stone cold and seen St. Mary’s take control of the game with a 12-0 run. Courtney had 10 points and Korissa had six.

In a thrilling quarterfinal game, Amherst took on Burlington Notre Dame who had earlier trounced the competition in their pool. Amherst managed to hang on for a well-earned 49-46 victory. Korissa led the way with 18 points, Courtney had 14 and Talya Tovar had six points.

Congratulations to Korissa who was selected to the tournament all- star team and also to the whole team for a very good showing at a very tough and extremely talent laden tournament.
